Technically you were told correctly - it does not need an antenna to operate, but if your reception is weak, I do think it's a good idea to add one. The right part for your stereo is the Jensen Marine Antenna # 1181067.
This will plug into a connector coming out of the wiring on the back (see photo), so you'll have to have it removed temporarily if it isn't currently accessible. view full answer...
